10 Best Places to Visit in India in September 2026

31/08/2026 6 min read By Wovoyage

September is a rewarding transition month for travelling in India. In many parts of the country, monsoon conditions begin to ease, while some regions can still receive significant rainfall. The landscape is often lush and green, waterfalls remain impressive, and the intense summer heat has eased in many destinations. In several places, September can also bring fewer crowds and better-value stays, making it an appealing time to explore India, whether you're chasing misty mountains, royal heritage cities, or vibrant local culture.

At Wovoyage, we plan every itinerary with women travellers in mind — safe stays, trusted local guides, and a community that has your back. Here are ten destinations worth adding to your September travel list.

1. Coorg, Karnataka

Often called the "Scotland of India," Coorg is particularly lush during the late monsoon. Freshly washed coffee plantations, cascading waterfalls, and rolling mist give the hills a storybook quality. September can still bring periods of rain, but that is also what gives the coffee estates, forests, and hills their deep green appearance.

Visit Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat, and Mandalpatti Viewpoint, or spend a morning exploring one of Coorg's coffee plantations. You can also visit Namdroling Monastery and try local Kodava specialities such as pandi curry, along with freshly brewed Coorg coffee.

2. Munnar, Kerala

Munnar remains beautifully green in September, with tea plantations and surrounding hills refreshed by the monsoon. Although Kerala can still experience rainfall during this month, the lush scenery makes it an appealing time for scenic drives, gentle walks, and a relaxed hill-station escape.

Explore the tea gardens, Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam, and Top Station, or visit the Tata Tea Museum to learn about Munnar's tea-growing history. Make time for freshly brewed Kerala tea and local South Indian dishes while enjoying the cool mountain atmosphere.

Want to explore Kerala with a women-only group? Wovoyage's Kerala Escape takes you through Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady, and Alleppey. Check the full itinerary here → https://www.wovoyage.com/tour/kerala-escape-kochi-munnar-thekkady-alleppey

3. Shillong, Meghalaya

Meghalaya lives up to its name — the "abode of clouds" — in September. The region is still within its monsoon season, so waterfalls and rivers can be particularly impressive, while Shillong's cool climate, cafés, and live-music scene make for a relaxed stay.

Visit Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, and Ward's Lake, or take a scenic drive towards Umiam Lake. For a longer excursion, explore Sohra (Cherrapunji) and Meghalaya's famous living root bridges. Try local Khasi and Northeast Indian dishes, including rice preparations, smoked meats, and regional snacks.

4. Leh-Ladakh

September is widely considered one of the best months for visiting Ladakh. The region is generally dry compared with much of India, the skies are often clear, and the summer tourist rush begins to thin out. The dramatic mountains and high-altitude lakes are especially striking at this time of year.

Explore Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and Thiksey Monastery, then plan excursions to Pangong Lake or Nubra Valley. Try local favourites such as thukpa, momos, and skyu, and remember to allow time to acclimatise to the high altitude before taking on strenuous activities.

5. Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

For travellers craving raw, stark beauty, Spiti in September is hard to beat. The monsoon has a much weaker influence here because of the valley's rain-shadow location, and the stark mountains, monasteries, and clear night skies can be enjoyed without the peak summer crowds.

Use Kaza as a base for visiting Key Monastery, Langza, Hikkim, and Komic, while Tabo Monastery and Dhankar offer some of the valley's most fascinating cultural landscapes. Try simple local dishes such as thukpa and momos, and check road conditions before travelling because mountain routes can still be affected by weather.

6. Udaipur, Rajasthan

Rajasthan's "City of Lakes" can be especially attractive after the monsoon. Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar may hold more water, while the surrounding Aravalli hills can appear greener than during the dry summer months. September can still be warm and rainy at times, but more comfortable evenings make the city enjoyable when conditions are favourable.

Visit the City Palace, Bagore Ki Haveli, Saheliyon Ki Bari, and Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace), then take a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola. For food, try Rajasthani favourites such as dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, and ker sangri, and browse the city's markets for textiles and handicrafts.

7. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

One of the world's oldest living cities feels particularly evocative in September, when the Ganges is typically high following the monsoon rains. Sunrise boat rides, the nightly Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, and the labyrinth of ghats and temples offer an unforgettable introduction to India's spiritual heartland.

Start with a sunrise boat ride, explore the old city's lanes, and experience the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. You can also visit Sarnath and shop for famous Banarasi silk, while local favourites such as kachori-sabzi, tamatar chaat, lassi, and jalebi are worth trying.

8. Ooty, Tamil Nadu

The Nilgiri hills stay cool and green into September, making Ooty a refreshing escape from the plains. Its misty landscapes, tea estates, and pleasant hill-station climate make it a good choice for travellers looking for a slower and cooler September getaway.

Ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, visit the Government Botanical Garden and Doddabetta Peak, or spend some time around Ooty Lake. A visit to a local tea estate is another must, while Ooty's famous handmade chocolates make an easy souvenir to take home.

9. Jaipur, Rajasthan

September can still be warm in Jaipur, but conditions are generally more manageable than during the peak of summer. With daytime temperatures often around the low-30s Celsius, visitors can explore the city's historic landmarks while enjoying the changing post-monsoon landscape. Rain can still occur, so check the forecast before planning outdoor sightseeing.

Explore Amer Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, and Jantar Mantar, then head to Nahargarh Fort for sweeping views of the Pink City. Jaipur is also excellent for shopping, with Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar offering jewellery, textiles, handicrafts, and traditional souvenirs. Don't miss local treats such as pyaaz kachori, dal baati churma, and ghewar.

10. Lonavala & Khandala, Maharashtra

Just a short drive from Mumbai and Pune, this hill-station duo is at its most photogenic during the late monsoon and early post-monsoon period, when waterfalls are still flowing and the valleys are carpeted in green. It's an easy, low-effort weekend escape for travellers craving a quick reset in the hills.

Visit Tiger Point, Rajmachi, and the nearby Karla and Bhaja Caves, or simply enjoy the misty viewpoints and waterfalls around the hills. Pick up some of Lonavala's famous chikki, and warm up with hot tea and local snacks while taking in the monsoon scenery.

A Few Notes Before You Go

September is a transition month, so it pays to choose your region wisely. Mountainous areas of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of the Northeast can still experience heavy rain, landslides, or temporary road disruptions, so it's worth checking recent conditions before finalising plans there. Coastal destinations such as the Andaman Islands can also have unsettled weather and may offer more limited water-sports activity at times.

Travel Safely, Travel Together

Whether it's the high passes of Ladakh or the temple lanes of Varanasi, September rewards travellers who plan ahead — and there's no better way to explore than with people who understand exactly what a woman traveller needs: verified accommodation, trusted local guides, and a community that travels with you, not just alongside you.
