10 Best Places to See Autumn Foliage in Japan | Fall Guide

02/09/2026 8 min read By Wovoyage

Japan is famous for cherry blossoms, but autumn offers a completely different spectacle. As temperatures begin to fall, forests, mountains, temples and traditional gardens gradually turn shades of red, orange, yellow and gold. The Japanese tradition of viewing autumn leaves, known as momijigari, has been enjoyed for centuries.

One of the most important things to know about autumn foliage in Japan is that the colours do not appear everywhere at the same time. The season generally begins in the north and at higher elevations before moving towards central and southern Japan. This means you can experience autumn colours from around September in parts of Hokkaido to November and beyond in places such as Kyoto and Nara. The exact timing changes each year depending on temperatures and weather.

From alpine landscapes and mountain valleys to famous temples and gardens, here are ten of the best places to see autumn leaves in Japan.

1. Daisetsuzan National Park, Hokkaido

Best time: Late September to mid-October

Daisetsuzan National Park is one of the best places for early autumn foliage in Japan. Located in central Hokkaido and home to some of the island's highest mountains, it is among the first areas in the country where autumn colours appear.

JNTO describes Daisetsuzan as one of Japan's earliest autumn foliage destinations, with hiking conditions and autumn colours particularly attractive from late September into mid-October.

The park's alpine scenery, forests and mountain trails create dramatic views, while areas around Sounkyo provide access to hiking routes, waterfalls and hot springs. For travellers visiting Japan specifically for autumn leaves, Daisetsuzan is one of the strongest early-season choices.

2. Lake Towada and Oirase Stream, Aomori

Best time: Mid to late October

Lake Towada and the nearby Oirase Stream offer some of northern Japan's most beautiful autumn scenery. Dense forests surround the lake and stream, creating colourful reflections and vivid views as the leaves change.

Oirase Stream is particularly enjoyable on foot, with a walking route following the river past waterfalls, moss-covered rocks and wooded landscapes. The area is also close to hot springs and other attractions in Aomori.

Because the foliage season arrives later here than in Daisetsuzan, mid to late October is generally a more appropriate period for planning an autumn visit.

3. Naruko Gorge, Miyagi

Best time: Mid-October to early November

Naruko Gorge is famous for its steep cliffs, forested slopes and dramatic autumn colours. During the foliage season, the mountainsides surrounding the gorge turn shades of crimson, orange and gold.

JNTO specifically recommends visiting Naruko Gorge from mid-October to early November, when the surrounding mountains can be at their most colourful. The Narukokyo Resthouse and nearby viewing platforms provide some of the best panoramas.

After exploring the gorge, travellers can visit Naruko Onsen, one of the area's well-known hot-spring destinations.

4. Nikko, Tochigi

Best time: October to early November

Nikko is an excellent choice for travellers who want to combine autumn foliage with Japanese history and culture. The region is home to famous sites including Toshogu Shrine, Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls.

The higher-elevation areas around Lake Chuzenji generally change colour before the lower parts of Nikko. This makes it possible to experience autumn foliage progressively as the season develops.

The combination of colourful forests, mountains, waterfalls and historic architecture makes Nikko particularly photogenic in autumn. Travellers can also try yuba, a traditional tofu-skin speciality associated with the region.

5. Kamikochi, Nagano

Best time: October

Kamikochi is one of the most scenic mountain destinations in Japan, with the Azusa River running through a valley surrounded by the Northern Japan Alps.

Autumn is one of Kamikochi's most popular seasons. Its official tourism information identifies October as the main fall-foliage season, with colours developing at different elevations throughout the month.

Kappa Bridge, Taisho Pond and Myojin Pond are among the most scenic spots. October is therefore a much more accurate recommendation for autumn foliage here than September.

6. Kurobe Gorge, Toyama

Best time: October to November

Kurobe Gorge offers a different way to experience Japan's autumn colours: by scenic railway. The Kurobe Gorge Railway travels through a dramatic mountain valley surrounded by forests, cliffs and rivers.

As autumn progresses, the mountains become covered in shades of yellow, orange and red, creating changing scenery throughout the journey. Nearby Unazuki Onsen also makes it possible to combine foliage viewing with a traditional hot-spring experience.

Because the colour season develops through the higher mountain areas first, October and November provide better opportunities than early September.

7. Lake Kawaguchi, Yamanashi

Best time: Early to late November

For travellers searching for autumn leaves with views of Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi is one of Japan's most recognisable choices.

The lake forms part of the Fuji Five Lakes region and provides views of Mount Fuji surrounded by colourful trees. Maple-lined areas around the lake become particularly attractive during the peak autumn period.

The famous Momiji Corridor is one of the area's best-known foliage-viewing spots, while the surrounding lake area offers walking paths, viewpoints and cafés. A local speciality worth trying is hoto, a hearty Yamanashi noodle dish.

8. Rikugien Gardens, Tokyo

Best time: Late November to early December

You do not have to leave Tokyo to experience beautiful autumn colours. Rikugien Gardens is one of the city's best-known traditional Japanese gardens and becomes especially attractive towards the later part of autumn.

The garden features ponds, bridges, walking paths and carefully landscaped scenery, with maple trees providing vivid seasonal colour.

JNTO specifically recommends Rikugien as one of Tokyo's notable autumn destinations. Seasonal illuminations may also take place, allowing visitors to see the garden after sunset when available.

9. Kyoto

Best time: Mid-November to late November

Kyoto is one of the world's most famous destinations for autumn foliage in Japan. Its temples, gardens, traditional neighbourhoods and surrounding mountains create an exceptional setting for colourful maple leaves.

Popular foliage locations include Kiyomizudera, Tofukuji, Arashiyama, Eikando and Nanzenji. Kyoto's official tourism information says leaves generally begin changing around the end of October, reach their peak around the middle of November and pass their peak towards the end of November, although timing varies each year.

Autumn is also an atmospheric time to explore Kyoto's temples and traditional streets, although popular sites can become extremely busy during peak foliage.

10. Nara

Best time: Mid-November to early December

Nara offers another spectacular combination of autumn colours, historic sites and traditional Japanese scenery. Unlike the dramatic mountain landscapes of Hokkaido or Nagano, Nara's foliage can be enjoyed among parks, temples and gardens.

Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha and Isuien Garden are among the places worth exploring, while Hasedera Temple is particularly scenic in autumn.

The foliage season generally arrives later than in northern Japan, making November a better choice for visitors hoping to see Nara at its most colourful.

Best Time to See Autumn Foliage in Japan

There is no single best month for the entire country. The season generally moves from northern Japan and higher elevations towards central and southern regions.

For early colours, consider Daisetsuzan in Hokkaido from late September. October is a strong month for destinations such as Nikko, Kamikochi, Naruko Gorge and Kurobe Gorge. By November, destinations including Lake Kawaguchi, Kyoto, Nara and Tokyo's gardens become more relevant.

Foliage timing can change from year to year, so checking updated local forecasts closer to your trip is important.

Travel Tips for Autumn in Japan

Autumn foliage attracts large numbers of visitors, particularly in Kyoto, Nikko, Lake Kawaguchi and other famous viewing areas. Travelling early in the day can help you avoid some of the busiest periods.

Temperatures can vary significantly between northern Japan, mountain areas and cities, so pack layers rather than relying on one type of clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are also essential because many foliage-viewing spots involve trails, gardens or temple grounds.

Most importantly, plan according to the specific destination and elevation rather than assuming that autumn reaches all of Japan at the same time.

Final Thoughts

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons to explore Japan, but its magic unfolds gradually across the country. From the early colours of Daisetsuzan in Hokkaido to the famous maple landscapes of Kyoto and Nara in November, different destinations offer completely different autumn experiences.

Whether you want to hike through mountain forests, photograph Mount Fuji, walk beside a colourful river valley or admire autumn leaves around historic temples, Japan offers an impressive range of foliage destinations.

The key to planning a successful Japan autumn foliage trip is timing your destination correctly. Choose northern and higher-altitude locations earlier in the season, then move towards central Japan as autumn progresses.
