The Women Who Carry Mountains on Their Shoulders: Meet the Trip Captains Behind Wovoyage’s Himalayan Journeys

05/07/2026 5 min read By Wovoyage

Introduction: Leadership Looks Different at 14,000 Feet

When people think of a trip leader, they often imagine someone checking hotel bookings, coordinating transportation, or making sure everyone reaches the next destination on time. While those responsibilities are important, leading a journey through the Himalayas demands much more than planning and organization.

At altitudes of 14,000 feet, leadership takes on an entirely different meaning.

It means staying calm when someone experiences altitude sickness. It means making quick decisions in remote mountain regions where help may not be immediately available. It means putting the well-being of every traveler before your own comfort.

At Wovoyage, we have witnessed this kind of leadership firsthand.

Our women trip captains have guided groups through the breathtaking yet demanding landscapes of Ladakh and Spiti Valley, helping hundreds of women experience these incredible destinations with confidence. They have managed unexpected situations, cared for travelers during difficult moments, and created an environment where women feel supported throughout the journey.

This is the story of the women who carry mountains on their shoulders.

Leadership Beyond the Itinerary

Planning a trip is one thing. Leading people through high-altitude mountain terrain is something entirely different.

Every journey through places like Ladakh and Spiti Valley comes with its own set of challenges. The weather can change unexpectedly, long travel days can become exhausting, and the high altitude can affect each traveler differently.

In these moments, a trip captain becomes much more than a guide.

They become a source of reassurance.

Sometimes that means comforting someone who feels anxious about their first mountain journey. Other times, it means staying awake through the night because a traveler isn't feeling well. There are moments when they accompany someone to a hospital in a remote mountain town while also ensuring that the rest of the group continues to be safe and cared for.

These are responsibilities that rarely appear in a job description, yet they are part of what our trip captains do.

Challenging Old Assumptions

Adventure travel has often been associated with the belief that difficult terrains, emergencies, and leadership in remote locations require masculine energy.

The challenging roads of Ladakh, the rugged landscapes of Spiti Valley, and the unpredictable nature of mountain travel have traditionally been seen as environments where men naturally take charge.

Our women trip captains challenge that assumption every single day.

They prove that resilience, confidence, and leadership are not defined by gender.

Instead, they demonstrate that patience, empathy, preparation, and calm decision-making are equally powerful qualities when leading people through some of India's toughest mountain destinations.

Their work reminds us that strength can look different from what many people expect.

Meet the Women Who Carry These Mountains on Their Shoulders

Behind every successful mountain journey are people who quietly make everything possible.

Srishti Chauhan

Srishti Chauhan has successfully led three trips to Ladakh and two journeys to Spiti Valley for Wovoyage.

Throughout these expeditions, she has managed health emergencies while helping nervous first-time travelers feel comfortable and supported. Her calm approach and maturity have helped many women confidently experience high-altitude travel.

Yountan

A proud local from Ladakh, Yountan has led more than eight expeditions with Wovoyage.

Managing logistics, handling emergencies, and guiding groups through one of India's most demanding terrains, he has consistently been a pillar of strength for travelers exploring Ladakh.

Sneha Choudhary

Sneha Choudhary has led more than three trips to Ladakh and has even traveled to one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth.

While her mountain experience is impressive, travelers often remember something else even more—her warmth, kindness, and the comfort she brings throughout every journey.

Kratika Maheshwari

Kratika Maheshwari has successfully led two expeditions to Spiti Valley.

Her leadership has helped create experiences where women feel safe, supported, and empowered while exploring one of India's most remote and beautiful destinations.

Sneha

Sneha has led countless journeys to Spiti Valley, including a recent expedition with Wovoyage.

Her familiarity with the mountains, combined with her ability to make travelers feel comfortable, has made her an invaluable leader throughout these adventures.

Neha

Neha has visited Spiti Valley more than 10 to 12 times and has recently led three back-to-back trips for Wovoyage.

Whether managing unexpected situations or caring for travelers at high altitude, she approaches every challenge with confidence, patience, and grace.

The Moments Travelers Never Forget

The mountains are beautiful.

But for many travelers, what stays with them long after returning home isn't just the scenery.

It's the people who stood beside them during difficult moments.

We've seen our trip captains skip meals while caring for someone who wasn't feeling well.

We've seen them become a comforting presence for travelers who were missing their families.

We've seen them spend hours outside hospital rooms in remote mountain towns while continuing to ensure the rest of the group was safe and looked after.

These moments rarely appear in photographs.

They aren't highlighted in itineraries.

Yet they define what leadership truly means.

Leading with Responsibility and Empathy

What makes these trip captains extraordinary isn't simply the number of mountain passes they've crossed or the number of expeditions they've completed.

It's the way they show up for people.

For them, leadership is not about authority.

It is about responsibility.

It is about empathy.

It is about being present when someone needs reassurance the most.

Every traveler joins a trip carrying different expectations, fears, and experiences. Some are traveling alone for the first time. Some are visiting the mountains for the first time. Others are stepping outside their comfort zone after years.

Our trip captains understand this.

They lead not only with experience but also with compassion.

That combination is what makes every journey feel safe, welcoming, and memorable.

Celebrating the Women Behind Every Journey

At Wovoyage, we celebrate women who travel.

But we also celebrate the women who make those journeys possible for hundreds of other women.

Every successful expedition to Ladakh or Spiti Valley reflects the dedication, patience, and commitment of the people leading it.

Their work often happens quietly, behind the scenes, without seeking recognition.

Yet their impact is felt by every traveler they guide.

They remind us that courage has no gender.

Leadership has no gender.

And strength doesn't always need to be loud.

Sometimes, strength looks like a woman standing at 14,000 feet after a long day in the mountains, still asking a traveler,

"Have you had enough water? Are you feeling okay?"

Those simple questions represent care, responsibility, and leadership in their purest form.

And perhaps, that is the most powerful kind of leadership there is.
