Why women travel to Georgia with Wovoyage

Georgia (the country, not the US state, the small Caucasus nation between Russia and Turkey) is the destination that Indian travelers discover and then can't believe wasn't on their list earlier. The reasons stack up: e-visa for Indian passport holders processed in 5 working days, no language barrier in tourist areas (English widely spoken), affordable compared to Europe but with a similar visual quality, the Caucasus mountains, ancient wine country, a hospitality culture that's genuinely a national religion, and a safety record that makes solo female travel completely viable.

We run two Georgia departures: a 6-day women-only escape in mid-July and a 6-day open group trip in mid-August. Both cover Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Gudauri and Kakheti. It's the trip our travelers describe as "the Europe trip you can actually afford."

When to plan your Georgia trip

Georgia has all four seasons but the windows that matter:

• May to early July is spring. Comfortable temperatures (18 to 25°C in Tbilisi), wildflowers in the mountains, no crowds. Kazbegi roads fully open.
• Mid-July to early September is peak summer. Tbilisi gets hot (30 to 33°C). Mountain towns stay pleasant. Both our scheduled departures land here. Wine harvest starts in late August.
• September to October is autumn, with Kakheti wine harvest and color in the mountains. Many locals say this is the best month.
• December to February is winter. Gudauri is a real ski destination. Tbilisi is chilly but walkable.

For Indian passport holders, Georgia offers an e-visa with a 5-business-day processing time. Cost is about USD 25. We send the application checklist on booking confirmation.

A typical Wovoyage week in Georgia

The 6-day route is Tbilisi (2 nights), Kazbegi via the Georgian Military Highway (1 night), Gudauri (1 night with ski-resort hospitality), Kakheti wine country (1 night), Tbilisi (1 night before the flight home).

Day 1 is Tbilisi arrival. The old town walking tour, sulfur baths in Abanotubani (the famous domed bathhouses that the city is named for), and dinner in a traditional supra-style restaurant where the toasts are part of the experience.

Day 2 is Tbilisi deeper: Narikala Fortress and the cable car up, the Bridge of Peace, Sameba Cathedral, lunch at a wine cellar in the old town, the dry bridge flea market for Soviet-era memorabilia, dinner at a polyphonic singing restaurant.

Day 3 is the Georgian Military Highway drive to Kazbegi. Stops at Jinvali Reservoir (turquoise water in a valley), Ananuri fortress, the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument viewpoint, and finally Gergeti Trinity Church framed by Mount Kazbek (5,047 m). The church viewpoint is the photo most people came to Georgia for. Overnight in Kazbegi with a homestyle dinner.

Day 4 is the descent to Gudauri (a ski resort town in summer mode, with paragliding and zip-line options as add-ons) and on to Kakheti wine country. Visit Sighnaghi (the walled wine-country city), a family winery for a qvevri-style tasting, and a Georgian cooking class for khinkali and khachapuri.

Day 5 is the Kakheti immersion. More wineries (8,000-year-old winemaking tradition, the oldest in the world per UNESCO), the Bodbe Monastery, lunch at a vineyard. Return to Tbilisi in the evening.

Day 6 is a slow Tbilisi morning, last-minute shopping, and airport transfer.

What it's actually like as a woman traveler here

Georgia is one of the easier solo destinations in the world for women. The hospitality culture is overwhelming (the phrase "stumari ghvtisaa," meaning "a guest is from God," is genuinely lived by). Friction points to know about:

• Vegetarian and Jain food. Georgian cuisine has more vegetarian options than you'd guess. Khachapuri (cheese bread), badrijani (eggplant rolls with walnut), lobio (bean stew), pkhali (vegetable spreads). Wine is plant-friendly. We pre-identify vegetarian-friendly winery lunches.
• Wine is a tradition, not a tourist activity. The host will toast at length. If you don't drink, request grape juice or compot in advance; tea is rarely on offer. Our trip leader handles this courtesy in Georgian.
• Sulfur baths. The famous bathhouses are clothing-optional. Private rooms are available (and what we book) so you can decide your comfort level. The sulfur smell takes 24 hours to wear off your hair.
• Period products are widely available at pharmacies and supermarkets in Tbilisi. Tampons are common.
• Cash and cards. Georgia is reasonably card-friendly in cities; smaller towns and wineries take cash (Georgian lari). ATMs accept Indian debit cards.
• Sun and altitude at Gergeti Trinity (2,170 m). Bring layers; even in July, the mountain is 12 to 15°C cooler than Tbilisi.
• Mobile signal: we provide a Georgian SIM on arrival; coverage is excellent everywhere except deep mountain passes.

What's included in a Wovoyage Georgia trip

For the 6-day group departure:

• All accommodation: a Tbilisi boutique hotel in the old town, a Kazbegi homestay or small hotel with mountain views, a Gudauri stay, and a Kakheti wine-country guesthouse.
• Private vehicle and English-speaking driver for all inter-city travel.
• All breakfasts and 4 group dinners (including a polyphonic singing supra in Tbilisi). Lunches are on you (₹400 to ₹800 at very good restaurants).
• Sulfur bath session in Tbilisi (90-minute private room).
• Sighnaghi walking tour and Kakheti wine tasting at two family wineries.
• Georgian cooking class (khinkali and khachapuri).

International flights, Georgia e-visa fee, and personal expenses aren't included.

On top:

• India to Tbilisi round-trip flights: ₹30,000 to ₹55,000 depending on city of departure (Delhi has direct flights via Mumbai-Doha or Dubai connections).
• Georgia e-visa: about ₹2,000.
• Lunches over 5 days: ₹2,500 to ₹4,000.
• Optional add-ons: Gudauri paragliding (₹6,500), additional winery tastings (₹1,500 to ₹2,500), 4x4 jeep to Juta Valley (₹4,000).
• Shopping: Georgian wine to bring home (you can carry 2 bottles per traveler duty-free), enamel jewelry, churchkhela (the famous candle-shaped walnut-grape snack). Budget ₹4,000 to ₹8,000.

All-in, budget roughly ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 on top of the departure price in the table, before optional add-ons.

What surprised our last group

The supra. The Georgian feast tradition with multi-hour toasts led by a tamada (toastmaster) is the part nobody expects to be moving and everyone ends up describing as the trip's emotional peak. Our last July group ended the week at a Sighnaghi vineyard supra where the tamada toasted the women's group specifically, and half the table was crying by Toast 5. The Kazbegi photo is the postcard. The Sighnaghi dinner is the memory.
